It all started in Buckingham, Virginia…

Edgar Jones

"Papa" 1865-1947

Doing everything

Edgar was the son of Dashwood and Irene Jones.  He was born in 1865, the year slavery ended.  His father owned 1100 acres of land, a notable accomplishment in his time.  With a third-grade education, he was a farmer and worked in the coal mines in West Virginia.  He loved reading the Bible and was very active in his church, Slate River Baptist.  Although he did not drive, he owned one of the first cars made, a Model T.  He was loved and well respected in the community.  Edgar’s siblings were Qunin, Floyd, Mary, Dashwood, Bell, Willie and Henrietta.

Ameta Jones

"Mama" 1882-1933

Giving everything

Armeta was born around 1883 to John and Polly Gough. She was 18 years younger than her husband Edgar.  Armeta attended Virginia State College and was a school teacher and excellent seamstress.  As a young child, she had platinum blonde hair.  As she grew older, her hair became so long that she could sit on it.  Armeta died at church while watching her children perform in a play written by Aunt Pig (Ella Irene).  Armeta’s siblings were Parthenia, Johnnie, Mary Beth, William, Ella and Sam.

Our promise to the family

A new start - the Jones Family owns acres and acres of land.

The 1927 house fire

Ted who worked in Lynchburg, decided to come home late one night.  When he arrived, everyone had already gone to bed and the house was on fire.  He rushed in and woke up Papa and Mama and then the rest of the family.  Papa and Mama ran through the house grabbing everything they could save from the fire.  Mabel realized that Elaine, who was five-years-old at the time was still in the house sleeping.  Mabel ran into the burning house and rescued her little sister, then claiming "That's my child because I saved her."  Ed had caught on fire trying to rescue items, and in a panic ran up the road until they caught him and patted the fire out. He was not seriously injured.  Papa ended up with burns on the hands and forehead.

The Jones Family home still stands today.

Rebuilding the family home

The house was completely destroyed right down to the root cellar.  Neighbors brought mattresses and blankets for the family to sleep on.  Later they pitched in and built a small shed up the road for everyone to live in.
After the original two-story family home was destroyed in the fire, a new “modern” house was designed, with a large kitchen, family room, stately front porch, two side porches and several bedrooms on the upper level.  The building of the current two-story house began and was completed in about a year. This house is still standing on the Jones property.  Edgar and Armeta were buried near the site of the original homestead.
