"Papa" 1865-1947
Edgar was the son of Dashwood and Irene Jones. He was born in 1865, the year slavery ended. His father owned 1100 acres of land, a notable accomplishment in his time. With a third-grade education, he was a farmer and worked in the coal mines in West Virginia. He loved reading the Bible and was very active in his church, Slate River Baptist. Although he did not drive, he owned one of the first cars made, a Model T. He was loved and well respected in the community. Edgar’s siblings were Qunin, Floyd, Mary, Dashwood, Bell, Willie and Henrietta.
"Mama" 1882-1933
Armeta was born around 1883 to John and Polly Gough. She was 18 years younger than her husband Edgar. Armeta attended Virginia State College and was a school teacher and excellent seamstress. As a young child, she had platinum blonde hair. As she grew older, her hair became so long that she could sit on it. Armeta died at church while watching her children perform in a play written by Aunt Pig (Ella Irene). Armeta’s siblings were Parthenia, Johnnie, Mary Beth, William, Ella and Sam.
